Currently presented at Art Capital 2025 at the Grand Palais in Paris, Francis Mbella continues a long-standing exhibition trajectory within established institutional and salon contexts. His participation in this major annual event situates his work within a tradition of contemporary painting that values formal rigor, material research, and sustained artistic presence, reaffirming his position within the international exhibition landscape.
Francis Mbella is the originator of the Tapioca Technique, a distinctive pictorial process in which surface, color, and relief interact to shape the visual structure of the work. He is also the initiator of the artistic movement Les Reflets de la Couleur, through which he explores chromatic depth and spatial construction beyond conventional formats.
Born into a family of artists, his father a sculptor and his mother a couturière and fashion designer, Mbella developed an early sensitivity to form, texture, and composition. He later trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he refined a practice centered on material experimentation and formal rigor.
An Extensive International Exhibition Record
Over the course of his career, Francis Mbella has presented his work in more than 400 exhibitions, solo presentations, and conferences worldwide. His exhibitions have taken place across major cultural centers including Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Moscow, Geneva, Brussels, Antwerp, Madrid, Tokyo, Venice, Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Douala, Yaoundé, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Orlando, and Tampa.
This sustained international presence reflects a long-term engagement with diverse institutional and exhibition contexts, positioning his work within a broad global framework.
Institutional Recognition and Distinctions
Francis Mbella has received multiple distinctions in recognition of his cultural contribution. He was awarded Cultural Merit by the City of Paris in 1990 and by the State of California in 1994. In 2004, he received a further distinction at the United Nations in Geneva.
He is also a recipient of honors from several artistic and academic institutions, including the Cercle des Arts de Paris, the Société des Artistes Français at the Grand Palais, and international academic societies in arts, sciences, and letters.
Exhibitions and Public Invitations
Mbella’s work continues to be presented within institutional and salon contexts. In 2025, his paintings are exhibited as part of Art Capital at the Grand Palais in Paris, including a private vernissage hosted by the Opera Art Collection.
Such invitations reflect an ongoing recognition of his work within established exhibition frameworks and public art events.
A Practice Focused on Color and Surface
At the core of Francis Mbella’s work lies a sustained investigation into color and relief as generative forces. Color is treated as an active element, shaping depth, rhythm, and spatial perception. Through layered surfaces and textured reliefs, the paintings engage with light and material presence, encouraging attentive and prolonged viewing.
His work favors balance over excess, structure over narration, and continuity over stylistic rupture.
